Because this kit offers real opportunities for learning and discovery with actual science equipment, there are a few precautions to be aware of:
• Your magnet is real! Be sure to keep it away from electronic equipment such as TVs, computers, cell phones, and cameras.
• As always, keep experiments away from your eyes, nose, mouth, pets, and babies. The magnetic putty might swallow the magnet, but you wouldn't want Fluffy or your young scientist's baby brother to do so!
With these pointers in mind, you and your young scientist are ready for a world of science fun and learning. You will be able to act as a facilitator as your scientist experiments and discovers the science principles of magnets. Magnetic fields are very cool and very real, but they usually can't be seen. Your kit will help you to sense and see magnetic fields and even put them to work. Your putty works because it is full of tiny magnets. In the presence of another magnetic field, each of these tiny magnets moves to align itself with the larger magnetic field. All of the tiny pieces moving take the putty along for the ride, making it seem as though it is alive and trying to eat the magnet. Don’t worry, though. Unless YOU are a giant magnet, your putty won’t try to eat you!
