The SE5-a was first developed in late 1916 & was one of the first allied fighters to be equipped with the constantinesco synchronizing gear for the forward firing Vickers machine gun. However, subsequent engine problems showed the delivery of this aircraft to the front. Not withstanding these, gearing and such problems, associated with the Hisso engines that lead to a substitution with the Wosley Viper engine, did the SE5-a come into its own. This new power plant gave the SE5-a the distinct "square jaw" look that led to the affectionate nickname of "farm tractor with wings"". At was end approximately 2700 were produced from various suppliers. SE5's served with 24 British Squadrons, 2 American Squadrons & 1 Aussie Squadron.
