This aircraft was designed as a collaborative effort between the French Nieuport CO and the Italian Coach Factory of F. Macchi. The aircraft's primary purpose was envisioned as escorting Caproni bombers on their raids into Austri and also to counter any ariel threat presented by Axis aircraft over the Adriatic Sea. Armament usually consisted of a single Flat machine gun but due to magazine limitations, this arrangement was replaced by dual Vickers guns.
